Deep Cleaning & Stain Removal

Pool Acid Wash Service

Remove years of stains, calcium buildup, and algae discoloration. AquaPros restores your pool's plaster finish to its original brightness with professional acid wash treatments.

Stripped. Scrubbed. Stunning.

An acid wash is a deep cleaning treatment that strips away discoloration, calcium deposits, algae stains, and years of wear from your pool's plaster or gunite finish. It's the most effective way to restore a dull, stained pool surface to its original bright, clean appearance.

Over time, even well-maintained pools develop mineral stains, waterline buildup, and surface discoloration that regular cleaning can't touch. Southern Maryland's mineral-rich water and humid climate accelerate this process, making periodic acid washing an essential part of long-term pool care.

AquaPros performs every acid wash with proper safety equipment, careful chemical handling, and thorough neutralization to protect your pool finish and the surrounding environment. We'll assess your surface condition first and let you know if an acid wash is the right solution — or if a less aggressive treatment would do the job.

What We Treat

An acid wash addresses deep surface issues that regular cleaning and chemical treatment can't resolve. Here's what it targets and when you need one.

What We Treat

Surface Issues We Remove

Acid washing strips away the top layer of deteriorated plaster, taking stains and discoloration with it. Here's what we commonly treat.

  • Mineral stains & iron discoloration
  • Calcium scale & hard water deposits
  • Algae staining & green/black marks
  • Waterline buildup & ring marks
  • General surface dulling & discoloration
  • Organic stains from leaves & debris
Signs You Need One

When to Acid Wash

Not sure if your pool needs an acid wash? Here are the telltale signs that it's time for a deep surface treatment.

  • Plaster looks dull, gray, or discolored despite balanced chemistry
  • Visible staining that doesn't respond to shock or brushing
  • Thick calcium or mineral ring at the waterline
  • Pool was neglected or left uncovered for an extended period
  • 5–7+ years since the last acid wash or replastering
  • Preparing the surface for a fresh coat of plaster

The Acid Wash Process

A controlled, step-by-step procedure that safely restores your pool surface without cutting corners.

01

Drain & Prep

We fully drain the pool, remove debris, and prep the surface. Surrounding areas are protected from acid runoff and splash.

02

Acid Application

A muriatic acid solution is carefully applied in sections, working from top to bottom. Each area is scrubbed to lift stains and discoloration.

03

Neutralize & Rinse

The acid is neutralized with soda ash and the entire surface is rinsed clean. Proper disposal procedures protect the environment.

04

Refill & Balance

We refill your pool, balance the water chemistry, and confirm the finish looks clean and uniform before we leave.

Frequently Asked

Everything you need to know about pool acid washing and surface restoration.

Ask a Question
Acid washing is suitable for plaster, gunite, and concrete pool surfaces. It is not recommended for vinyl liner, fiberglass, or tile-finished pools, as the acid can damage those materials. During our initial assessment, we'll confirm whether your pool surface is a good candidate for acid washing.
Most pools benefit from an acid wash every 5 to 7 years, depending on water chemistry, usage, and environmental factors. Pools with persistent staining, heavy tree coverage, or mineral-rich fill water may need it sooner. We'll evaluate your surface and give you an honest recommendation.
When performed properly, an acid wash removes a very thin layer of the plaster surface — just enough to strip away stains and discoloration. This is safe for plaster in good condition. However, if your plaster is already thin, cracked, or severely deteriorated, we may recommend replastering instead. We always inspect the surface first and advise accordingly.
A typical residential acid wash takes 1 to 2 days including draining, the wash itself, neutralization, and refilling. Larger pools or severely stained surfaces may take slightly longer. We'll give you a clear timeline upfront so you know when your pool will be back in service.
After the acid wash is complete and the pool is refilled, we balance the water chemistry before leaving. However, we typically recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours after the water is balanced before swimming. This allows the chemistry to fully stabilize and ensures the water is completely safe and comfortable.
